What:
A Q magnet is a Quadrapolar magnetic device made up of four alternating magnetic poles, + and -. The positive and negative pair of magnetic poles attract and repel each other to produce steep field gradients. Magnetic field gradients are the forces used in quantum physics to affect particle beams.

How:
In order to understand how the quadrapolar array relieves pain, one must first understand the mechanism of pain. Pain results from dysfunction of one or more areas of the nervous system. Sensations of pain are generated by low intensity, low frequency firing of nocioceptive unmyelinated C fibres. After an injury, a combination of chemical and electrical events occurs locally at the site of the injury. These chemicals and electrical events generate messages that are sent through the central nervous system or 'hard wiring' of the body to the brain.

The first cell experiments where performed at Vanderbilt University by Dr Robert Holocomb, M.D, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Neurology in 1988. Human dorsal root ganglions were harvested during surgery by permission of patients and stimulated to fire action potentials.

The evidence showed it's the steep field gradient that blocks the sodium and calcium pumps of the membrane wall of nerve cells and returns abnormally firing nerves to a resting state. If the abnormal nerve signal does not reach the brain, the pain is not perceived.

Physiotherapists at Lifestyle Therapies use Q Magnets along with laser therapy and other techniques as an adjunct to treatment to achieve the best possible outcomes in treating pain and assisting in recovery after injury.

The neutromagnetic therapy (Q Magnets) used at Lifestyle Therapies are a revolutionary way to relieve pain. Q Magnets…
* Were developed by neurologists
* Are the first therapeutic magnets backed by both basic scientific research and extensive clinical pain management experience
* Utilise an exclusive quadrapolar technology that has been used extensively and researched by a major university- Division of Neuromagnetics, Department of Neurology at Vanderbilt University Medical Centre.
* The technology has been developed, tested and used by health professionals around the world.

After many years of testing, researching and clinic trials the unique quadrapolar design was discovered that is truly effective at blocking pain. There is now extensive clinical experience and research validating the application of Q magnets for pain relief.

Research has show that it is not the magnetic field strength but the unique field gradient produced by the quadrapolar arrangement of the four magnets that is the determining factor in alleviating pain.

Laboratory experiments published in peer reviewed journals have shown that single pole, bipolar and other magnetic field variations have not produced a similar effect on neuronal tissue. It is the steep field gradient generated from the quadrapolar array that blocks the sodium and calcium pumps on the membrane wall of nerve cells. This effectively reduces the ability of the nerve ending to transmit a signal (Action Potential) back to the brain that there is a pain stimulus.

Studies in the laboratory and clinical data collected have demonstrated that Q magnets are effective in the treatment of:
Acute pain
Chronic pain and
Postoperative pain.

Q Magnets can be used for common aches and pains of daily living such as headaches, neck pain, jaw pain, tooth pain, shoulder pain, upper and lower back pain, elbow and wrist pain, hip, knee and ankle pain. It has been demonstrated that the device is most effectively utilised when it is placed over the area of abnormally functioning pain fibres.

Pain receptors at the end of C nerve fibres are affected by the chemical irritation from the inflammatory response. Q Magnets block the ion gates and allow the chemical irritation to be flushed away by the surrounding lymphatic system, thus aiding the healing process. Laser Therapy is an excellent adjunct to treatment as it stimulates healing by up to 50% while Q magnets block the pain.

Less chemical irritation -> less muscle spasm -> less nerve irritation -> less joint irritation -> less pain.

Damaged nerve endings and chemical pain signals cause increased pain and lead to weakening of the affected area. Q Magnets and laser therapy, along with the professional advice of your treating therapist, help being healing to the injured areas at the cellular level.

Practitioners at Lifestyle Therapies are well trained in neuromagnetic therapy and in particular the correct placement of the Q Magnets for the most effective results.

Note: Q Magnets are intended to be used for the management of localised pain. Magnetic therapy is not a substitute for any clinical treatment that is recommended or prescribed by your treating doctor or therapist. If you have symptoms other than pain, suspect you have an underlying medical problem or your pain is not relieved or returns, consult your treating clinician.

Important, read before applying Q Magnets:

Q Magnets are Therapeutic Magnets, manufactured by Optimal Life Australia Pty Ltd.

Intended use:
Q Magnets are a Medical Device intended to produce a weak magnetic flux field over a superficial body site to potentially provide comfort or localised temporary relief of minor aches and pains (eg. From muscle soreness/stiffness, arthritis etc.) The magnet is typically applied directly to the skin with adhesive.

Neither this information sheet, nor this technology is intended to be a substitute for any medical treatment that is recommended or prescribed by your doctor or health care professional.

Principle:
The Q Magnet or Quadrapolar magnet design in this device creates steep field gradients, which are essential for its effectiveness. This design is four magnets of alternating polarity (+/-/+/-) that are clustered together in such a way to produce symmetric steep magnet field gradients, called magnetic flux. When placed over the nerves, Q Magnets work by blocking certain pain signals being transmitted to the brain. It is a safe, non-invasive treatment for the temporary relief of pain and assistance in reducing inflammation.

If You Have: chest pains, shortness of breath, or other symptoms of an ischemic attack or heart attach do not use this device until you have been seen by a physician. If you suspect and Underlying Medical Problem, or your pain is severe and cannot be relieved with the use of these devices, please consult your health care provider.

Warnings:
  • Do not use if your doctor has advised against the use of magnetic devices
  • Do not wear Q Magnets near sensitive medical equipment or implants such as pacemakers, dorsal column stimulators, infusion pumps, or any other magnetically programmable medical devices.
  • Do not use with transdermal patches.
  • Do not use Q Magnets on pregnant women
  • Do not use Q Magnets directly on the skin underneath a heat pack as the heat pack as the heat from the heat pack can make them hot.
  • Do not apply a Q Magnet to an open wound however, it can be used on top of a bandage after the wound has been covered.
  • This product is not a replacement for professional medical treatment.
  • If you are uncertain if these contradictions apply to you, consult your health care professional prior to use.

    Precautions:
  • Do not place Q Magnets near computers, computer monitors, computer floppy disks, credit cards, magnetic access cards, audiocassettes or video tapes. Do not place on or near sensitive mechanical or electrical equipment. As with any magnet, it may damage them.
  • Tape and other adhesives can cause skin irritation in isolated cases
  • If skin irritation develops due to a allergic reaction to the device or the tape, discontinue use and or consult a health care provider.
  • For those with sensitive skin, a barrier product is recommended such as Skin Prep (Smith and Nephew). These products when applied to the skin before applying the device create a barrier between the skin and the adhesive.
  • Vitamin E applied to the skin prior to use (please remove excess so the adhesive will stick) will assist in providing relief from and even preventing skin irritation.
  • If skin irritation or skin break down develops due to the adhesive, consult your health care provider.
  • Changing the tape frequently,. Ever 2-5 days, will assist in preventing skin irritation.
  • After removing the devices, please clean the skin and dry well before reapplying.

    Caring for Q Magnets:
  • Do not expose your Q Magnets to extreme temperatures such as can occur if left in a hot car for extended periods.
  • Avoid dropping them or hard impacts as this can damage the magnetic devices.
  • Water will not damage Q Magnets and they may be worn in the bath or shower.
  • If properly maintained, Q Magnets will retain their unique magnetic fields for the life of the owner.
  • Do not use if there are any visible signs of rust or deterioration.

    Proper Application and Placement:
  • Apply the Q Magnets directly to the skin with an adhesive tape such as Fixomull, Hypafix or Qfix.
  • Make sure the skin is clean and dry
  • When applying to the body, always keep the orientation arrow pointed upward.
  • The magnetic fields may interfere with each other if places too close together while not all facing the same direction (except for smaller Q magnets- MiniQ's)
  • Allow a minimum of approximately 2.5 cm or 1 inch between each Q magnet (expect for the smallest Q magnet- MiniQ's)
  • Mark their position before removal so you know exactly where to replace them.
  • Use a skin barrier such as Skin Prep by Smith and Nephew for skin protection from the adhesive.

Correct placement of the Q magnets is critical to their effectiveness. The devices work on abnormally firing pain signals so it is important to find the correct placement where these abnormally firing pain signals originate. For use in an acute injury, the correct placement is on the injured part of the body. For back pain that radiates to the sciatica, hip or thigh, placement is more complex and may require help from a trained health care provider. Check periodically that the Q Magnets have no shifted out of their recommended position.

Shifts of as little as 1cm or ˝ inch can result in missing the target nerves and so you will not get the desired result:
    For example
    1. For locaised pain such as a toothache, place the Q Magnet directly on the pain site.
    2. For pain that covers a larger are such as lower back pain, refer to illustrations as a guide. If the pain is not reduced or relieved within a few minutes, move the magnet slightly to see if a different placement is more effective.
    3. If multiple Q Magnets are used, always keep the orientation mark pointing upwards. Allow approximately 1.5-2cm or 1 inch between each Q magnet.
    4. Once the Q magnets have decreased your pain, they should continue to do so for as long as the magnet is fixed in its proper location if your pain returns, check to see that the magnets are in their proper location.
