Adam (Kutcher) and Emma (Portman) never really had a "relationship". A brief flirtation at school and a one night stand the night before Emma's father's funeral was pretty much the extent of it. But then, one night, after their third fling had flung, Adam and Emma realise that this thing they have going on, the carefree, no meeting the parent's, no-asking-if-I-look-fat-in-this thing is exactly what they need. Emma, after all, is too busy with her medical studies to give her relationships the attention that they invariably require and Adam... well Adam is a guy. So there and then they strike a deal. All sex, zero relationship, no strings attached.
