As the seasons change, they are visited by friends and family. These include their 30-year old son Joe (Oliver Maltman), a community lawyer, and their friend Ken (Peter Wight), a tragic figure who puts on a brave face despite his meaningless life and Gerri's emotionally unstable colleague Mary (Lesley Manville).
