Melbourne's disadvantaged and homeless families will need more than a pear tree this festive season, as Wesley Mission Victoria's annual Food For Families Appeal counts down the first Day of Christmas. For many Victorians the cost of buying fresh fruit is just too much. They simply just don't have the money to buy fresh produce. For reasons out of their control they barely have enough money to cover rent, bills and food let alone 'luxury' items such as these.

Ten years ago, Jennifer's* life could not be better. She had a good job and a large circle of friends; was expecting her first child, planning to get married and living in a great apartment. She thought she knew what a homeless person looked like. That is, until she become one herself.

Almost overnight, her life changed dramatically. The relationship she was in broke down due to domestic violence. She had to flee that situation and leave her job, taking her young daughter with her.

Jennifer said, "My perfect life was in ruins. I became a single parent with no security, and for the first time in my life, I felt what it was like to struggle. "Wesley's Food For Families Appeal helped me with the essentials like food, phone cards and my daughter's Christmas present," she said.

"Today, my life is getting better; I have graduated from university, found permanent Government supported housing and I'm gradually rebuilding mine and my daughter's life. I will never forget the trauma and shame of not having enough food to feed my family but I will also never forget what Wesley has done for me," she said.
