Raechel Whitchurch is staring down the barrel of the busiest year of her life. She'll be joining
Adam Harvey for a massive national tour in 2021, stretching from February to October, which has made this year all the more important for writing and recording new music. Her latest single and video,
'You Ain't One of Us', follows the success of
'My Father', which has been streamed over
125,000 times on
Spotify and spent nine weeks in the
The Music Network Country Hot 50 airplay charts, peaking at
#9.
Whitchurch wrote
'You Ain't One of Us' after feeling like she was too much.
'I was too loud, too forward, too excited,' she says.
'Just too much. It wasn't the first time I'd felt this way and I know it won't be the last. Sometimes we just don't fit in with the people around us and it can be heartbreaking, making us question if we need to tone it down a bit. I tried, and you know what? It was the hardest five minutes of my life.'
'You Ain't One of Us' was recorded at
Love Hz Studios with
Matt Fell, who has worked with some of the brightest stars in Australia's country scene. And when it comes to stars,
Whitchurch is determined to keep hers shining bright. '
The truth is, it's okay not to fit in everywhere and with everyone,' she says.
'It forces us out into the world to find our people so rather than give up, I decided to keep going and keep believing that who I am is who I was made to be. This moment of clarity came for me halfway through writing the song and what started as a story of self-doubt and loneliness became a song of hope and confidence. I hope it helps someone else find that little spark too.'
The accompanying video, which
Whitchurch self-produced, was filmed at
The Soda Factory in Sydney's Surry Hills with
Brad L. Spencer as Director of Photography. Her last two singles were filmed in beautiful natural landscapes and she envisioned something a little grungier for
'You Ain't One of Us', something a bit more edgy. '
It [The Soda Factory] is an American diner-style music venue and they've been battling to keep the doors open since March, yet they're still putting on music six nights a week,' says
Whitchurch.
'It's dark, imperfect, mysterious and intriguing – the perfect place to try and capture the emotional turmoil and anxiety that comes with questioning who you are.'
Though
Whitchurch's 2021 is already packed full with the
Adam Harvey tour, she has found time to tour with country heavyweights
Shane Nicholson and
Colin Buchanan. She'll also be performing at the
Winton Way Out West Festival in April,
Savannah in the Round in October and aboard the
SuperCruise in November.
By the end of it,
Whitchurch will have no doubt proved that she's one of us and, more importantly, connected with what she terms her people.
'They're the ones,' Whitchurch says,
'who support us, believe in us and come alongside us. They're cheering us on when we win and picking us up when we don't.'
