How To Keep Kids Active These School Holidays

Getting the kids out of the house during winter can always be a difficult task. The National Heart Association of Australia recommends children and young adults should participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day. So now, more than ever, it's important for parents to find activities that are fun and active to stimulate both mind and body.

With school holidays around the corner, as a parent or carer, you might be scrambling to come up with things that will keep the kids entertained.

So we've made it easy and have found five fun activities to do these holidays that will get their little hearts and minds racing, but won't break the bank:

Play in the snow

Grab your scarves and gloves for an escape to a winter wonderland. Keep kids entertained and active for hours with all of the best snowy activities such as ice skating, snow ball fights, and real ice tobogganing.

-Snow Time in the Garden' at Hunter Valley Gardens is the perfect place to get your snow-fix. With an ice skating rink, giant snow globe, jumping castle and the beautiful gardens to wander though, there is plenty of fun on offer for the whole family.

Get competitive with laser tag

Young kids are always entertained when they are chasing each other around. It is so simple, yet so amusing. In laser tag, kids get to put a fun twist on the game of chase by running around in the dark with coloured lights and music, creating an adrenaline-packed experience. It's a great way to keep a large group of children entertained for a few hours and to enjoy a little bit of fun competition.

Splash around in an indoor water park

Children and families alike can feel like summer never ended by riding the current in the wave pools and splashing down the water slides in an indoor water park. This activity will keep the kids fit as they swim and play in the pools with friends, all while avoiding the cold temperatures outside!

If you're in Sydney, Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre will be running a variety of programs and activities to keep the kids occupied these school holidays.

Frolic in the park

A fun, free activity for the whole family can be to enjoy a day at your local park. Everybody can stay warm and active with plenty of outdoor activities available. Kids could ride their bikes, climb on the equipment or play chase. To make a complete day of it, pack a picnic and enjoy some winter sunshine. This is the perfect activity if parents or carers want to keep costs low and stay close to home.

Do some flips at a trampoline arena

What better way to spend a winter's day then at an indoor trampoline arena? Get the heart racing by doing plenty of flips and tricks with your friends – this one's also for the whole family so mum and dad can join in on the fun too.

With 36 locations Flip Out is Australia's largest trampoline franchise and is the perfect way for your little ones to stay fit and active over the cooler months. The great thing about Flip Out is that there are no height or weight restrictions, meaning that the whole family can take part!
