Triennial EXTRA: NGV's free 10-day, late-night festival of performance, talks, food, drink and DJs

Triennial EXTRA | 19 – 28 JANUARY 2018 (6PM – MIDNIGHT) | NGV International | FREE

Celebrating the inaugural NGV Triennial exhibition, Triennial EXTRA is a FREE 10-night festival open until midnight from 19 – 28 January at NGV International, featuring dance, performance, guest DJs in the NGV Garden, talks, pop-up bars and restaurants.

From 6pm until midnight every night, Triennial EXTRA takes over the NGV Triennial exhibition and NGV Garden. Highlights include Shakespearean excerpts performed by Bell Shakespeare within the new large-scale sculptural work Mass by Ron Mueck, Muslim -speed dating' hosted by Hana Assafiri in Moroccan tearoom Noss Noss and a residency in the NGV Garden Restaurant by Melbourne chef Andrew McConnell.

In a world-premiere collaboration between the NGV and Melbourne's internationally acclaimed dance company Chunky Move, Accumulation is a guided dance tour of the NGV Triennial exhibition featuring over 40 dancers and volunteer performers. Curated by Chunky Move Artistic Director Anouk van Dijk, Accumulation explores human rituals and the transient relationships between people, places and objects through a gradual amassing of bodies within the gallery spaces.

Award-winning Melbourne chef Andrew McConnell takes over NGV's Garden Restaurant, transforming it into the newly realised restaurant Supernormal Natsu. Serving lunch and dinner from 12pm to 10pm daily during Triennial EXTRA, Supernormal Natsu presents a new and exclusive summer menu for NGV diners, inspired by McConnell's popular Melbourne pan-Asian eatery Supernormal. Guests will be treated to an evocative culinary experience, celebrating the smells, tastes and sounds of Natsu (Japanese for -summer').

Inspired by the forms and sounds of shifting icebergs and glaciers in the Antarctic, Floe is a large-scale 3D printed sculpture that will completely immerse visitors under its translucent canopy. Set within the NGV Great Hall, the sculpture has been created by architect Roland Snooks using advanced 3D printing techniques and comprises seventy individually printed polymer panels. The sculpture will emanate a haunting soundscape by composer Philip Samartzis, who travelled to Antarctica to record the sounds of moving ice shelves and sea ice.

Some of Australia's favourite musicians will take up residence as DJs during Triennial EXTRA, bringing to life Melbourne's best backyard, the NGV Garden. Highlights include DJ sets by members of indie-rock group The Jungle Giants, alternative band Saskwatch, singer-songwriter Dan Sultan, indie artists Cloud Control, rocker Tex Perkins, husband and wife duo Dave Graney and Clare Moore and electropop act Miami Horror.

Audiences can also take tours by leading scientists, technologists, writers and campaigners, including award-winning science journalist Tanya Ha and African artist collective Still Nomads, who explore themes and contexts central to the NGV Triennial such as identity, technology, race and the environment. Triennial EXTRA also presents a variety of talks, including engaging and critical discussions presented by The School of Life, VICE Australia, Koorie Heritage Trust and community collective Ladies of Leisure.

Featuring a design referencing classical sculpture and a cocktail menu inspired by native Australian flavours, the Dan Murphy's Discovery Bar is a creative collaboration in the NGV Garden between Melbourne artist and designer Ryan L Foote and 2016 Australian Bartender of the Year, Charlie Ainsbury.
