Following the release of his debut solo EP unfolding in August via Spinning Top Records | Caroline Australia, bambi aka Dominic Simper uncovers the ethereal official video for élan vital.
Directed by Kristofski, the visual accompaniment was captured on film in New Zealand and Los Angeles, with the latter location directed via FaceTime. "The video is a not so subtle homage to a Shirley Clarke short from the 50's titled A Moment in Love," says Simper of the video. "What struck me the most was the way the energy and movement of the dancers blended with the natural environment - in some ways perfectly encapsulating the concept behind the track. Kristofski, whose work I've adored for years, was an obvious choice in terms of putting it together."
Kristofski adds, "Dom sent me an old art piece of a couple dancing that had looked like it was from the seventies which was my first reference. I used the 1970 horror film Valerie and Her Week of Wonders as a solid style and aesthetic reference whilst putting this together. I love the overlays and mixed zoom on top of zoom."
The surreal and cascading élan vital feat ures the emotionally saturated nostalgia embodied in sweeping film soundtracks from decades past combined with warm synthesiser textures. The track, roughly translated to 'life force,' demonstrates the constant flux of recurring patterns encountered throughout life.
unfolding is an ode to the touring member of Tame Impala's love of Japanese new age music, 60's and 70's European film soundtracks and 20th century classical minimalism. Recorded at home while living in the Netherlands and mixed by James Ireland (POND) in Fremantle, on unfolding, bambi searches for the elusive and paradoxical blend of stillness and movement.
The EP examines the ways in which our realities are constructed through our senses, introversion as a means of exploration of the psyche, love, and fragility on a serene journey through a sparse landscape of bubbling synthesisers, pillowy strings, and pianos. unfolding delivers an inspiring, hypnotic and cinematic debut from a singular artist who is every bit as inner focused, humble and unassuming as he is gifted.
