Following the release of his acclaimed sophomore album ONCE, New Zealand singer-songwriterMACEY returns with a powerful new interpretation of one of the album's most emotionally resonant tracks. Releasing today, 'sad and selfish' (feat. Savanna Leigh) sees MACEY joined by rising Nashville-based singer-songwriter Savanna Leigh, who brings an entirely new perspective to the deeply personal song. Listen HERE. Originally written as an unflinchingly honest examination of regret and accountability after the end of a relationship, 'sad and selfish' sees MACEY confronting his own mistakes rather than rewriting the past. On this new version, Nashville singer-songwriter Savanna Leigh enters the conversation with an original verse that imagines the perspective of the person left behind, transforming the song from a solitary confession into a moving dialogue between two sides of the same story.
While MACEY's original lyrics acknowledge his own mistakes and longing for closure, Savanna's newly written verse imagines the response from the other side, adding a fresh emotional dimension to the story. "I wrote this one in Ben's studio about two or three years after my first big break-up," MACEY shares. "I was talking with Demi about the area where I used to live with my ex, and how I'd sometimes find myself back there, looking up at our old apartment and wondering what she was up to. Whether we'd ever run into each other and finally be able to talk openly about everything. I guess the song is an apology to her - me admitting my faults in the relationship and accepting that I let a good thing go. It's been an honour having Savanna join this new version. I sent her the track and she had her verse written within a day or two. Hearing her imagine how the other person might have felt adds a whole new layer to the story."
For Savanna Leigh, the collaboration felt immediately personal. "I'm so grateful that MACEY and his team thought of me for the sad and selfish collaboration," she says. "Not only did they ask me to be a part of the song, but they also gave me the space to write my own verse and bring my own ideas into a song I already loved. I wrote my verse one afternoon on an acoustic guitar while I was staying in East London, and it all came together so naturally. I ended up recording the final vocal back in East Nashville, and I've been so excited for everyone to hear what we created together ever since."
Known for her deeply introspective songwriting, Savanna Leigh has quickly built an international following through music that explores the emotional patterns behind love, heartbreak and personal growth. With more than 100,000 monthly Spotify listeners and support slots alongside artists including Mackenzy Mackay, Esha Tewari and Jade Bird, Savanna has become one of the most compelling emerging voices in the singer-songwriter space.
What began as one person's attempt to make sense of a past relationship has become something much bigger. By inviting Savanna Leigh to write and perform an entirely original response, 'sad and selfish'evolves into a rare musical conversation - one that explores accountability, empathy and the possibility that closure doesn't always come from having the last word.'sad and selfish' (feat. Savanna Leigh) deepens the story of the original, turning a song about reflection into one about understanding, forgiveness and the complexities of moving on. 'sad and selfish' (feat.
