With her new release out today, Australian singer-songwriter Ally Paterson delivers a haunting and immersive reinterpretation of John Williamson's'Prairie Hotel Parachilna', a vivid portrait of Australia's inland beauty, fragility and grit, carried by a voice that moves from hushed intimacy to soaring emotion.
'Prairie Hotel Parachilna' captures the poetry of a harsh, ancient landscape and the people who pass through it. Ally's version leans into that sense of place, letting space and texture do the talking. Her vocal sits gently at first, then rises with quiet authority, echoing the resilience and rawness at the heart of the song.
"Prairie Hotel Parachilna is my favourite song by John Williamson. I love how it sounds, and how John captured beauty in a harsh landscape. We were in the studio with Matt Fell and we had some extra time, so I asked if we could record a cover. I am so happy with how it turned out, and I'm excited for people to hear it!"
The recording came together organically in the studio with multi-award-winning maestro, Matt Fell (Troy Cassar-Daley, Sara Storer, Fanny Lumsden) at the helm. Rather than chasing polish, the pair focused on feel, creating a soundscape that felt lived-in and true to the song's spirit.
"It was quite remarkable," recalls Ally. "After we took down the chords and structure of the song, Matt went outside to think about the production, how to make it original and still true to the spirit of the song."
Pulling from a menagerie of unorthodox instruments, Matt began crafting the track. "He banged on a cheese grater with a metal stick. He shook a Huggies wipes box full of rocks. He played several tambourines. The next day, I put the vocals down and we had an incredible piece of music. I must give all the creative credit to Matt here. He put everything together so quickly, and it sounds so good. All I had to do was sing."
While 'Prairie Hotel Parachilna' is a cover, it sits comfortably alongside Ally's growing body of original work. A farmer, mother and songwriter deeply connected to the land she lives and works on, Ally brings lived experience to every note she sings. This is not country music as costume - it's country music as reflection and truth-telling.
Raised in a musical family, Ally cut her teeth as an event singer in Melbourne – everything from late night bars and weddings to the glittery Crown Casino. Those formative years sharpened her performance and storytelling instincts. Now she farms cattle and sheep in regional Victoria and wouldn't have it any other way. The singer-songwriter writes and records with a strong sense of responsibility to place and people.
Her forthcoming country/folk album, currently in the works with Matt Fell, continues that thread - drawing inspiration from the traditions of Australian storytelling while documenting her own journey into rural life, resilience and community.
'Prairie Hotel Parachilna' stands as both a tribute and a statement; honouring an Australian classic while reinforcing Ally Paterson as an artist rooted firmly in the land she sings about.
