Interview with Karly Lane

Question: What inspired you to write Morgan's Law?

Karly Lane: We were actually on a trip back from central QLD and had taken a different way home. Because we'd never been through some of these little towns before, I was busy looking out the car window and the thought just popped into my head- 'what if someone in your family died and in their will they asked to be returned to a small town in the middle of nowhere that no one in the family had ever heard of before?' I grabbed whatever I could find to write on and began to scribble down the outline for each chapter and had all my characters named- I couldn't wait to get home to start writing it on the computer!


Question: How much of your inspiration comes from real life and real people?

Karly Lane: Small towns are great for inspiration. Every town has some form of a gossiper, a troublemaker, the snob, the floozy....I wouldn't say I've carbon copied any one person, but I've definitely taken bits and pieces of people I've known over the years and meshed them together to make my characters.


Question: What was the best thing about creating the character of Sarah Murphy?

Karly Lane: I loved Sarah she shares my loathing of frogs and was so girly and out of place in Negallan in the beginning! She was so much fun to write...there's just way too much that can go wrong when you get a girly girl and the country coming together.


Question: What research went into setting the book in Negallan?

Karly Lane: Because Negallan is a fictional town, I didn't need to research the actual place but I did need to do some research on the cotton industry for the background of the book. Cotton is an amazing plant--Did you know that the fibre from one 227kg cotton bale can produce 215 pairs of jeans, 250 single bed sheets, 1,200 t-shirts, 2,100 pairs of boxer shorts, 3,000 nappies, 4,300 pairs of socks or 680,000 cotton balls? sourced from Cotton Australia website


Question: Have you always wanted to write novels?

Karly Lane: I've always written. Even as a kid I would write and dream up stories. I decided to sit down and seriously write in my late twenties and completed my first real novel. However it was rejected, put away between having babies and underwent many re-writes before finally being published last year for the first time, under my other writing name of Karlene Blakemore-Mowle. That same year, North star was also contracted so I went from having nothing to having a total of four books published last year.


Question: Are you working on another novel currently?

Karly Lane: I'm always working on something, I can't imagine not being in the middle of a book! I have another two novels on the go at the moment one a romantic suspense and the other a rural fiction title.
