Ready to take the stage at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas this month - the only Aussie country artist on the international multi-genre lineup - Melanie Dyer steps into 2026 with a song that feels like sunshine bottled in three minutes. Her uplifting new single 'Golden Girl' is a bouncy, heartwarming pop country anthem that captures the magic of young love.
Following her previous single 'Homemade', 'Golden Girl' leans into Melanie's gift for honest storytelling, this time drawing directly from her own family history.
"When I was a kid, my Dad told the story about how he used to park his red Holden Sandman outside the 'Golden Fleece' truck stop where a pretty girl worked behind the counter. He said, with confidence to his friend, 'I'm gonna marry that girl someday' and eventually those baby blues won over my Mum."
Set against playful production, the track was produced by Grady Saxman (Austin Snell, Tyler Braden, Julia Cole, Hannah McFarland) at Saxman Studios in Nashville, TN (Jelly Roll). It marks a milestone moment in the studio for Melanie.
"It was my first experience live tracking in the studio with all the musicians at one time. I sang a scratch vocal with the live band first and then they played the song a few times. I later went in to sing vocals in the booth. It was incredible to hear the song come to life in real time and have a say in what instruments and parts to play."
The result is punchy, polished and brimming with warmth - a contemporary country love story that feels both deeply personal and universal. The nostalgia continues in the track's music video, filmed in Melanie's hometown of Inverell during Summer while she was home for Christmas. Directed and shot by Jackson James (and produced by Jackson James and Melanie Dyer) the clip brings the lyrics vividly to life - right down to the truck stop itself."We wanted to recreate that nostalgia as close to the original as possible when it came to the music video. We filmed at the exact location of the truck stop in my hometown, Inverell. We put a call-out to see if anyone had a vintage Holden we could use and a local reached out saying they had a green Holden that was originally owned by my Great Grandfather which felt so special to feature in the video."Now based in Nashville after officially relocating in April 2025, Melanie is still deeply connected to her regional Australian roots. Growing up on her family's farm in Mount Russell, she began writing songs at just twelve years old. That farm-girl authenticity has since taken her to major stages including CMA Fest in Nashville, invitational writers' rounds at The Bluebird Cafe and The Listening Room, and a sold-out Australian and New Zealand tour supporting US artist Cooper Alan in late 2024.With over 12.5 million career streams, 3 x Golden Guitar nominations, 3 x APRA AMCOS Most Performed Country Work nominations (including her hit, 'Memphis T-Shirt', James Johnston's 'Got It Good' and Kaylee Bell's 'Good Things'), and 2025 Countrytown Female Artist and Tour nominations, Melanie's momentum continues to build on both sides of the Pacific."Moving to Nashville has inspired me more than ever to tell the story of who I am and where I come from. I am writing and recording my most personal music yet and my new album will be coming later in 2026."Taken from that forthcoming album, 'Golden Girl' is more than a love song. It's a tribute to country beginnings, small towns and the kind of love that lasts a lifetime.
