Grace Fuller Interview

How would you describe your music?

My music can be described as a unique blend of indie/pop with elements that draw inspiration from various genres and influences. My style combines the angsty allure reminiscent of Olivia Rodrigo with the honeyed vocal tones of Joni Mitchell, creating a compelling and emotionally charged musical experience.

Can you tell us about your new album? What was the inspiration?

The inspiration for 'Lovers' came from this fragment of an idea that had been sitting in my phone for years, waiting to be transformed into music. This speaks to the power of capturing moments and emotions as they come to me, even if I don't immediately know how they'll be used. The resulting song, 'Lovers', explores the bittersweet aftermath of missed romantic opportunity. The song delves into the notion of shared secrets and memories, highlighting the depth of the connection that once existed.

What are your musical influences?

I'm continually inspired by new artists, always discovering fresh voices that resonate with me. Over the years, a handful of musicians have left a lasting impact on my songwriting journey. I often find myself drawing inspiration from the likes of Joni Mitchell, Jewel, and Alanis Morissette. Their storytelling prowess and the folk-like quality in their voices have a profound influence on my work.

On the other hand, I'm equally drawn to the raw and emotional depth found in artists like Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift, and Amy Shark. Their lyrical intensity and passionate delivery inspire me in a different way. I like to think that, as I continue to develop my craft, I can capture a mix of all six of these incredible artists in my own unique style.

Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Choosing between performing live and recording is tough because I have a deep passion for both. Recording is a thrilling process, watching my songs evolve in the studio as they come to life with each instrument is an amazing experience. However, I have to admit, I'm absolutely in love with performing live. The energy, the crowd's enthusiasm, and the electric atmosphere are what I live for, and I genuinely can't get enough of it.

What should we expect from a possible upcoming tour?

While the idea of hitting the road and performing for fans is incredibly exciting, I must admit that a tour is a bit ambitious for me at this moment. I'm still finding my feet in the industry having just released my first single. However, I'm very much looking forward to the future and the possibilities it holds. I hope I'll have the opportunity to go on tour in the near future and share my music with a wider audience. For now, I'm just enjoying the journey of discovering who's listening to my music and where this path may lead me.

What motivates you most when writing music?

I have a habit of collecting creative fragments, whether they are quotes, melodies, or other snippets that resonate with me, is a valuable and productive way to gather inspiration. These fragments are like puzzle pieces that, when put together, create a complete picture, a song in this case. I love drawing inspiration from the world around me, capturing the essence of moments, emotions, and experiences.

Which music/artists are you currently listening to?

Lately, my playlist has been filled with the amazing sounds of Mimi Webb, Tate McRae, and Lauren Spencer-Smith. These talented, underrated female musicians are true powerhouses, and I believe the world needs to hear more of their incredible work. Of course, I still have a soft spot for veterans like Miley Cyrus and Coldplay, but there's something special about discovering new artists and following their musical journey. It's an exciting way to stay connected with the evolving music landscape.

What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

I've wanted to sing for as long as I can remember. However, there was a definitive moment in 2004 when I attended a Delta Goodrem concert. I was around 8 or 9 years old at the time, and I vividly remember feeling incredibly inspired, and in that moment, I knew with absolute certainty that pursuing a career in music was what I wanted for myself.

If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Thats a tough one! If I had to pick, I'd say collaborating with Vance Joy would be pretty cool. I admire his unique approach to music and his distinctive style. However, I've had a dream of collaborating with Keith Urban for quite some time now. I love incorporating country elements into my music, often inspired by Keith, so collaborating with him would undoubtedly be an incredibly cool experience.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced in the music industry?

The music industry presents its fair share of challenges, and one of the most significant is the desire for a career in music. Interestingly, I encountered skepticism on my journey when my high school music teacher advised me not to pursue a music career. I remember being told that I wouldn't "make it" because I wasn't deemed a "strong enough musician." However, it's worth noting that my goal has never been solely to "make it" in the traditional sense. The music industry offers numerous pathways for musicians, and my primary focus has always been to create music that connects with people on a deep and meaningful level. It's this connection and the ability to share my music's emotional depth that truly drives me.

What's next, for you?

I'm currently in the process of writing for a 5-song EP, with a planned release in 2024, although I'm aiming for it to be sooner rather than later. I want to make sure that I put my absolute best work out into the world, so I'm not looking to rush anything. This EP is a project that I'm pouring my heart and soul into, and I can't wait to share it with my audience when the time is just right.
