Interview with Ebony Moore

Question: Tell us about Words Music Art?

Ebony Moore: Words Music Art is my first EP and I independently released it myself on my birthday. It's five songs from my heart and I promise I didn't hold back on this project, sharing pieces of my life story - the trials, struggles, triumph as well as my passion for music! It's my words, my music, my art and I hope to uplift others in someway.

Question: What was the inspiration behind Detox?

Ebony Moore: A friend of mine who was being incredibly strong through a horrible heartbreak said to me, "Detoxification is good for the soul", meaning take the time to self-cleanse and release the hurt from your spirit through prayer, meditation and focusing on what truly makes you happy. So, I was inspired to finally release the fear of sharing my past hurt of being in a abusive relationship. I had already written down how I felt but was afraid to record it so others could hear it. I gave it a shot, calling the track "Detox" and just let my emotions go! While recording, knowing this song was coming from such a dark place, I asked the producer to turn off all the lights so I could get it all out. I cried, I screamed but Detox was birthed and I finally healed.

Question: What message do you want people to take from Detox?

Ebony Moore: The message I want to convey is please do not be afraid to walk away from an unhealthy situation. I was one of the fortunate ones because I did so. Anything that's harmful to you is not good for you and love does not hurt! So whatever you're going through, know that your happiness and peace of mind matters most. You deserve to be happy! (I repeat) You deserve to be happy! So do what's necessary to take care of your wellbeing and don't be afraid to seek help if you need it. You'll become even stronger with a great support system.

Question: Do you write your own songs? What's your inspiration?

Ebony Moore: Yes and it's a blessing to be able to express my thoughts and feelings with words. Then I'd create the melodies on my beloved keyboard. I wrote my first song when I was only ten years old and I just knew I had a gift after catching my older brother singing it. My family still remember that little silly song to this day. It's called, "Quick" and who knows maybe I'll sing it at my next gig just to humour everyone.

My inspiration for writing is my emotions. Even though I'm a talker, it's always been easier for me to write things down just like in a diary, only you can sing what I've written!

Question: What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?

Ebony Moore: I listen to Rock, Blues, Pop, Jazz, Rap, Reggae, Gospel or Country. It doesn't matter; I enjoy all kinds of great music! I love Barry White, Mick Jagger, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lenny Kravitz, Bob Marley, Sade, Angela Bofill, Dolores O'Riordan, Jay-Z, Donnie McClurkin, Cree Summer, The Smashing Pumpkins, Adele, Lauryn Hill and the list goes on and on and on... I even like electronic music creators like David Guetta, especially his song "Titanium" featuring Australian artist Sia. I love it, it motivates me and I'm so addicted to her voice!

Question: What's next? Tour/Album/Single?

Ebony Moore: I want to tour, I want to record an LP and I want my own recording studio so I can create all the time. I'm also pursuing acting and just got an agent, so I'm getting myself out there and auditioning. Wish me luck!

Question: Was there a moment you contemplated throwing in the towel?

Ebony Moore: There were several moments I felt like giving up but I just can't no matter how tough the journey gets. It's not meant to be easy and I obviously have a calling or the songs wouldn't pour out of me like they do. Through any adversity, I'm able to write and in knowing that just one song can encourage another person, it would be selfish of me to quit! So, I'll persevere and do my very best.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Ebony Moore: Although I love recording, it's nothing like performing live and engaging an audience. You see their faces and feel their energy, knowing they are just as passionate as you are because they relate to you by smiling, crying, laughing and really get into the music. It's incredible and I probably admire them more than they admire me.

Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Ebony Moore: Music and my father! My dad is the best and the biggest music lover I know. He listens to all kinds of great music old and new. He even has this amazing record collection of 50's and 60's music. I was so heavily influenced as a child whenever he played his records, whether in the morning, the middle of the day or late at night. I would mimic everything I heard and sing along with him. It was his spirit lifter after a hard day's work or when he just simply wanted to relax. I desired to have that same effect on others the way music affected him. Then I soon discovered that music was my muse as well. Both of my parents are musical. My dad played an instrument when he was younger but it was stolen and my mom eventually came out of her shell, proving to be an amazing songbird who writes as well. I was different from most little girls. Instead of just getting dolls or girly stuff for Christmas, I received electric drums, a trumpet, keyboards and even an acoustic guitar one year. I'm truly blessed to have my parents who are very supportive and always in my corner!

Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?

Ebony Moore: My biggest challenge was trying to convince a record label to take me as I am instead of trying to change me into what they thought would sell. Maybe it wouldn't have hurt so much if they could sing or even write a song. I know who I am as an artist and individual, so why try to make me fake it! Who would believe me, if I don't believe myself? Then after scams and disappointments along the way, I just finally decided to go at it on my own and make my music, my way! My music is a reflection of me, my feelings and my artistry. I'm not afraid to be unique and have my own style. To me, that's what makes a star! You're shining your light on others. It's your moment, so be you! It's not about competition but about being true to yourself and your listeners. I've got a story and music is my way of expressing it!

Question: What's a typical day like?

Ebony Moore: A typical day for me is just chilling, being me :) I read books, especially my bible, exercise, watch music videos, maybe shop, enjoy family and good food, get together with friends, spend time with my boyfriend or chatting on the internet...you know fun stuff! It can't always always be about work, right?

Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?

Ebony Moore: My favourite part of becoming a music artist is when someone comes up to me after a show and tell me how much my music encouraged them. It gets no better than that and without a doubt encourages me to keep going!

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Ebony Moore: Lenny Kravitz! He's an emotional rocker to me that pours his soul into his music. He's an awesome musician who plays everything from piano, guitar to drums! You can hear influences of R&B, Jazz, Gospel, Reggae, Funk as well as Rock in his music and it's a beautiful blend with his edgy vocals. Lenny is an extraordinary talent that can just get down, no matter the genre and as an artist I can definitely dig that!

Question: Do you have a website fans can visit?

Ebony Moore: Oh yes, please feel free to connect with me on Facebook - www.Facebook.com/ebonemusic or Twitter @ebonemusic

Question: Can you tell us 5 things required for a happy healthy & enjoyable life?

Ebony Moore: Be Righteous, Have Faith, Give Charity (Love), Be Hopeful and Be Peaceful. Put GOD 1st and Enjoy Life, Make It Count!
