Dorsal Fins, Star of the Show

Dorsal Fins, Star of the Show

Following their syrupy bop 'Sugar', lush single 'Sister' and funky groover 'Criminal', Melbourne's cult pop-mystiques Dorsal Fins today share their third album Star of the Show', out now via Dot Dash. Alongside the albums release they share the video for their final single 'S.O.S (Stick of Sage)', another delicious taste from their glorious sonic return.

This year's best feel-good song about a well-loved self-enlightenment product: Stick of Sage (S.O.S) is a cleansing journey through spooky harpsichords & organs, a fantasy of rippling castanets, orchestral flourishes to a groovy beat. Penned by co-lead vocalist Jarrad Brown, the song speaks to our own obsessions with self-help, wellness and self- improvement.

Internet self help conspiracy content, and holistic pyramid schemes really meant a lot to us during the making of the record and we just wanted to sing about it all with some commonplace chords, and a few flourishes on the castanets." says Jarrad"We wanted a song to reflect the true energy of our collective journey, and our continued commitment to some of our favourite new age self-enlightenment products. We wouldn't be where we are today without the magic of an S.O.S."

Of the video, director Sarah Aiken shares, "This video is a colourful exploration of magic and movement, borrowing images from the occult, astral travel and attempts to ascend to higher planes. The constant downward slide throughout is a little bit of a nod to the comedown after ascension. The clip embraces the aesthetic and the allure but notes the darker side of the (often incredibly privileged) sage-waving, mantra-making, western spiritualism that appropriates anything and everything to 'manifest' beauty, health and material wealth. I played with digital collage to layer textures and images and to shift scale, creating otherworldly landscapes to navigate and multiples that follow different simultaneous realities- populating a fantasy world of crystals and colour with endless replicas."

Star of the Show is the group's first record in six years, peeling back from a cast of nine mates to a record made by the band's songwriting trinity - Liam McGorry, and co-vocalists Ella Thompson & Jarrad Brown. A reimagining that spanned a year of Sundays, Star of the Show allows their funky, soulful roots to come through and collide with some "more jangly" flavours in true eclectic 'Fins form. The self-referential album title Star of the Show is a tongue-in-cheek nod to the truly collaborative nature of the record. "In some ways Star of the Show is sort of an ironic title because it actually has been the most collective thing we've ever done," explains McGorry. "When you're collaborating, you never really know how it's going to go. You each have your own influences, but on this record, we just had a bit more space," adds Brown.

Each of them a prolific songwriter in their own right, McGorry (Ex-Olympian, Saskwatch), Thompson (GL) and Brown (Eagle and the Worm), decided to bring their best ideas to the studio and hold nothing back. On this record, the trio, together with producer and friend John Castle, have distilled the chemistry that sits at the cetacean core of Dorsal Fins, to create a sonic escape that any heartsick or euphoric music lover can swim right into.

Rising from an alt-pop aquatic dream from the Hope/Ovens Street studio mile of Brunswick, Dorsal Fins plunged into the scene in 2015 and have since ventured into a surreal & constantly evolving sound that is all their own. 2015's debut record Mind Renovation was triple j Feature Album on release and their follow-up second album Digital Zodiac followed swiftly in 2016. With luscious songwriting and twin-flame co-vocalists at the helm, it is no surprise that Dorsal Fins quickly earned a reputation for experimental, energetic & immense live shows around the country.
To celebrate the release of Star of the Show, Dorsal Fins will be launching the album at Melbourne's The Night Cat on Friday 24 June, with supports from Karate Boogaloo and DJ Friday. Tickets are on sale now - see below for further details.
