Dogs on Show

The human-canine bond hasn't occurred simply because humans see puppies as cute. Rather, it's evolved through the work that dogs and humans have performed over the hundreds of years of working together. So strong has been the selection of canines and humans working together that scientists believe it is entrenched in the DNA of both species to seek out each other for companionship and, dare we say it, love.

Today's dogs have not forgotten their origins, so as such the greatest pleasure you can give your dog is a job to do for you. Whether your dog likes to race, chase, is ball or frisbee focused, Dogs on Show will showcase over 13 dog sports ideal for canines and handlers of all ages, stages and ability. Hosted by Dogs NSW at the Complex for Canine Affairs, Dogs on Show will be held on Saturday June 15th from 9am to 4pm.

Both physically and mentally stimulating, dog sports provide a safe, fun and simulated environment for dogs to burn off energy in a constructive way.

A performance sport such as Lure Coursing will not only entice the sight driven sporty canine but it is a great spectator sport too! Lure Coursing aims to preserve and develop the coursing skills inherent in sighthounds, the hounds chase plastic bags on a course laid out to simulate escaping game. Lure Coursing 'try outs' will start from 10.15am and welcome visiting dogs (all breeds) over 12 months of age.

If chasing isn't your dog's chosen sport, there will be fast paced Agility, Flyball, and Jack Russell Terrier racing demonstrations to watch. However, dogs with common 'scents' will enjoy the audience participation of the Scentwork spectacle or show goers can catch a glimpse of light footed canines reaching sky-high heights in Frisbee Dogs. Trick training and Dancing with Dogs will leave the crowds in awe of the canine skillset. While our steady urban working dogs will connect with their inner-country-self in Herding exhibitions and Drafting dogs will simply carry the load.

Dogs love industry; simply retrieving a ball, working with their handler will not only please your dog but there is an innate satisfaction that humans receive when they achieve even the very basics in training a dog.

With over 150 breeds and 1,000 dogs on show, a variety of activities, events and stalls, Dogs on Show provides a truly unique family day out for both two and four legged family members. Visitors will have the opportunity to talk to training, sporting and breed clubs - from the giants of the dog world, the Pyrenean Mountain Dog and Leonberger to toy breeds including the Papillon and Pekingese. Little ones will pawsitively enjoy the free sample bags, face painting and a dedicated colouring-in space as well as an opportunity to role play and learn the responsible way to approach and pat a dog.
