Lacquered in teen angst and polished with refinement,
Detour's indie-pop-punk single
'Say The Word' is a proclamation of a band ready to stake their position in the Australian music scene. Pulled from their forthcoming debut EP
'Say The Word', out April 20th, they set the stage for a confident body of work exploring modern teenagehood.
'Say The Word' is a step up for the band, showing their refinement in songwriting, growth and maturity (while still foregrounding their teen angst with a chanted
'f*** this, f*** that, f*** you!' in the bridge)
"The lyrics and storyline of the single is trying to mimic what your brain sounds like when you have a crush on someone, the lyrics are examples of things you would just blurt out when you get nervous or flustered around this person. It's really about how when you fancy someone and would do anything for them and lose sleep over not being with them" Detour Recorded at
Sumo Sound Studios in Western Australia, 'Say The World' welcomes creative influences from
Tristan Sturmer (Sparrow, Pretty Ugly's) who produced and mixed the track with mastering by
George Georgiadis (The Vanns, Matt Corby, Babe Rainbow). Since meeting at Rockscholars when they were 11,
Annalise Feilding (bass guitar),
Rebecca Milne (vocals and rhythm guitar),
Jonah Widdis (lead guitar), and
Sebastian Smith (drums) have been playing ever since. Friends first and band mates second they navigate the turbulent time of young adolescence and translate their experiences into polished yet hard-hitting songs.
It may be surprising to hear Detour have only released 3 songs prior, and are still in their teens with their impressive resume. Their debut single
'Left Shoe' raked in
51k+ streams and saw them win the
2021 WAM Song of The Year u18 category and place as second runner-up for the
Song of The Year Grand Prize. With their sound in a similar vein to
Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, Teenage Joans and
WAAX they ride the wave forward of powerful female-fronted bands. In the time that they've been playing they've scored a number of impressive supports for
Red Hook, Stella Donnelly, Noah Dillon, Sly Withers and more. As a band they've refined their live set cutting their teeth on stages for
WAMFEST (2019, 2021 & 2022) as well as
Fairbridge Festival and
Hyperfest.
Detour's heartfelt heavy-hitting anthems will be taking to the stage on
Saturday 22nd April for a headline launch show of 'Say The Word'. Accompanied by local supports
Centre, Bratface and
Sonic Haze, Detour will bring their electrifying stage presence sharing their blaring noise and powerful energy.
