Perth's indie four-piece Death by Denim are once again delivering up their honey vocals, dreamy synth and vibrant guitar riffs as they unveil their brand-new single 'Small World', recorded at Debaser Studios (Little Birdy, Tired Lion, Riley Pierce).

Premiering on triple j's Good Nights, the new track is the first taste of what's to come from their forthcoming sophomore album and the first new release since their debut 'Sleepless and Sunkissed.

'I'm in my room, my bank account is quite low, I'm cut up over a relationship ending, lacking self-esteem, a bit sick and just generally trying to figure out what I'm doing with my life. Things haven't gone the way I wanted in certain areas – so I wrote this song,' says lead guitarist and songwriter Palle Mazzulla. 'I am very fortunate that my problems don't compare to what's going on in the world right now thanks to the pandemic, but they still feel heavy.'

'Small World' is the band's first release of 2021 and showcases a step up in emotional maturity for the group. Tapping into feelings of social anxiety and inadequacy, the song explore s the crushing weight that a failure to confront personal issues can have on a person's psyche.

'For this new release we really focused on getting back in touch with what's going on in all of our lives, getting more personal with our lyrics and have them shine through,' says Palle. 'Small World really stood out in the studio and the addition of a 12-string guitar was something we hadn't done before. Nik fully explored his voc al range before the last chorus and just poured his heart into the whole performance,' he adds.

'Small World' follows a string of successful releases last year, with Death by Denim having three songs added to high rotation on triple j from their debut album and seeing fan favourites 'Cigarettes and Honey' and 'Wiggy' both surpass 1 million streams on Spotify. 2020 also saw them signing to Paradigm Talent Agency as well as being part of a select few to showcase at BIGSOUND50 and SXSW's first digital festival. The band are currently on a sold-out national tour of the country.

"Approaching this music video, I found myself focusing on the feeling of isolation and the sense of invisibility that the band had written about,' says director Daniel Hildebrand. 'To match the visuals to the upbeat track, I wanted the shots to have a bright and vivid look while still exploring a range of lonesome emotions. I took a stylized Wes Anderson approaching while setting up my frames to create a comfortable shot for the eye to sit in.'
