Dead Mall Release '100% Pure Poison' Ahead of Debut Album Release

Dead Mall Release '100% Pure Poison' Ahead of Debut Album Release

Easily the most experimental track in their discography to date, '100% PURE POISON' pushes the band to its limits - with a sound almost indistinguishable from their earlier releases. Incorporating elements of nu metal, dance-punk and electronika, '100% PURE POISON' is dense in its layering and relentless in its intensity, consistently building and chasing bigger peaks throughout its runtime.

Recorded, mixed and produced by the bands guitarist Darcy Long - '100% PURE POISON' was one track from the bands upcoming LP that really allowed Long to dig his teeth in and get creative during the recording process - with room to experiment with layering, vocal effects and samples.

"As a nu metal kid at heart this song in particular really resonated with me from the get go. When Joe brought us the demo there was already so much happening, but it felt like it could be pushed even further in the studio.

Once we started working on it, everything seemed to come together.. there's so many layers carefully crafted in to work with each other, it's got dance breaks, washed out deftones-esque vocals, HM2 chainsaw guitars and DJ scratching. Definitely a mix bag and plenty of elements to listen for that you may not notice on the first listen"

Although the track was written predominantly by guitarist Joe Willis, there were a few gaps in the lyrics when the band finally hit the studio. Frontman Ruairi Burns dove head first into his book of references and found a few interesting creative inspirations to help fill out the track - which ended up carrying over to other parts of the record.

"A few years ago, I was working on a food truck outside the mall. On the weekends, the outdoor food-court DJ (Dan Phelan of legendary hardcore band 'Ceasefire') would play this specific track, 'You Keep Coming Back' -  100% Pure Poison. The whole record is online now, but at the time, I'd either have to work weekends or turn up at another show, just to hear one song. The sample you can hear at the end of 'Gasoline' is taken from the same record. The lyrics that Joe put together for the first draft were super dark, so I finally had a chance to make that reference in the first verse (as well as the name).

In that original version, we also didn't have a chorus melody, so I did what I always do - I watched movies. There's a good chance I was watching Cherry 2000 at the time I was writing it, the dialogue is almost verbatim. But there were a lot of similarities between the lyrical themes of the demo and that of Cherry 2000 (apart from the sex robots)."

Released alongside the track is a music video from Central Coast animator and visual artist Thommy Crowe.

Crowe, who has previously worked with Dead Mall creating animation for their 'GASOLINE' music video earlier this year, has created a beautifully dark, wild and haunting digital landscape for the track - a perfect visual representation for the chaotic, nihilistic tones found within the song's lyrics.

While working on the track, Thommy threw himself into the work completely, stating that "I let the track take the wheel and it took me here. The track went from a stranger in my home to a great mate. We were at the edge and it pushed me to go even further. It was fun and so scary! Watch out for the copper thief! Thankyou Blender. Thankyou Dead Mall."
