Melbourne indie pop artist Bel Kil has just unveiled her phenomenal sophomore EP, Wasted Emotion. Nurturing the momentum which arose from the release of a pair of brilliant singles in 2024 – namely 'Rose Street' and 'Not Whatchu Think' – Bel returns now with a more extensive project in Wasted Emotion, ready and eager to take things to the next level.
Having written, recorded, and produced every element of the EP herself, Bel Kil proves time and time again that her musical abilities extend beyond those of a brilliant singer-songwriter alone. The EP was then mixed by 2 x Emmy winning and Bafta Nominated Producer, Mixer and Engineer Guus Hoevenaars (Courtney Barnett, Vance Joy, The National, Tones & I, The Avalanches, Tkay Maidza, Scissor Sisters). On the process of producing the EP, Bel said:
"When you create every part yourself, it's hard to step back and hear it with fresh ears. You know every detail and have heard it repeatedly, making it tough to decipher what's essential or how the song truly feels when you already know what's coming. I'd love the superpower to wipe my mind of the song and experience it emotionally for the first time." BEL KIL
Receiving production mentoring and advice from Telenova's Ed Quinn throughout the operation though, Bel was excited to incorporate fresh perspective into her own process, expressing that his "feedback proved incredibly helpful." She explained that, "in many cases, it centred around reductive production, focusing on eliminating unnecessary ideas and sounds. I want to keep growing as a songwriter, producer and engineer and his feedback was so helpful. In most cases it was about reductive production, eliminating unnecessary ideas and sounds." BEL KIL
Undertaking a journey through the mind, heart, and worldview of Bel Kil, the Wasted Emotion EP offers "a rollercoaster ride through a range of raw emotions and lived experiences." With the already released singles 'Rose Street' and 'Not Whatchu Think' alone delving into such a range of themes, from finding excitement in vulnerability and the thrills of potential romantic connection, to a statement of self assuredness, and a desire to be authentic to oneself in every aspect of life– there is no topic too big or too small, too personal or too universal for Bel Kil.
On new track 'Ruthless', Bel defies the challenges laid out before her on the path to her dreams, committed beyond measure to pursuing them at all costs. 'Kinda Funny', meanwhile, emerges as a celebration of these pursuits, and of having the courage to undertake them despite the judgement of others and the expectations of the world we live in.
Finally, the EP's focus and title track, 'Wasted Emotion', uncovers the bittersweet nature of growing up, framed as something of a love letter to the self. The song offers comfort, advice, encouragement, and an overall sense of understanding to its narrator's past self. It condemns all of the insecurities and judgements that we tend to lose so much time and energy over when we're young, dismissing them all as nothing more than a 'wasted emotion', and 'uninvited notion'.
