With the 25th anniversary of the Tampa crisis being marked this month, the ABC is proud to present the compelling documentary series Tampa: The Turning Point. The three-part series will premiere on ABC TV on Tuesday 1 September at 8.30pm, with all episodes available to stream on ABC iview from 7am on Wednesday 26 August.
In August 2001, when an overcrowded Indonesian boat stalled in the Indian Ocean, the Captain of a Norwegian freighter MV Tampa and the Australian Prime Minister collide over the fate of 433 asylum seekers, triggering an extraordinary eight-day standoff.
Tampa: The Turning Point is a gripping, comprehensive account of the eight-day crisis, told directly through the candid accounts of those directly involved in the unfolding drama - from the refugees to the ship's Captain, to the politicians, to the Prime Minister John Howard himself.
Australia's radical experiment to stop asylum seekers was internationally condemned at the time for its brutality. Twenty-five years later, the series examines how the Tampa crisis transformed the treatment of asylum-seekers worldwide and continues to shape immigration policies across the globe.
