Switched

Can a love affair evoke the seven deadly sins?

Led by lust and followed by envy, sloth, pride, gluttony, greed and anger, Alfred Sparman's new novel, Switched, is a story of love, sex, money and revenge. When Rosa, a Puerto Rican beauty, entrances renowned cardiac surgeon Dr. Alfred Sparman, he risks everything in his life for lust.

After succumbing to his desires, lies and deception kick in, setting off a chain of events that turn his life upside down. As Alfred's life hangs in the balance, his twin brother Ashton steps forward to instigate his long awaited plans, adding a whole new twist to the story.

Switched is part fiction and part reality, encouraging readers to distinguish fact and fiction and challenge them to apply it to everyday life. Written from the protagonist's point of view, the main character envelops the feelings, emotions and actions that result from surrendering to the seven deadly sins.

Sparman's storytelling is reminiscent of that of Adam and Eve and Cain and Abel, evidence that the feelings and actions described within Switched have been ingrained in the human population from the start.

Switched is the sequel to Sparman's first novel, 1.58 Seconds, an entertaining, revealing read exploring the integral relationship between life and death as it brings readers into the operating room.

Dr. Alfred Sparman is a board certified physician and an interventional cardiologist who spends his free time writing. He lives in Belleville, Barbados, and is currently the CEO of The Sparman Clinic. Sparman previously published 1.58 Seconds, the prelude to Switched.

Interview with Dr. Alfred Sparman

Question: Why was it important to you that Switched was more than a standard medical textbook?

Dr. Alfred Sparman: To be different, doctors always write about medicine and I wanted Switched to be more than that.

Question: The book is part fact and part fiction - can you talk about the research that went into this book?

Dr. Alfred Sparman: I've been lucky enough to have visited places such as Costa Rica and stayed at the Marriott hotel, which assisted in the writing process. However, there are other places that the protagonist didn't go in the book, such as Ashton's stint at Riker's Island, which was entirely fictional and required a great deal research.

Question: How can we stay one step ahead of temptation?

Dr. Alfred Sparman: To stay one step ahead of temptation you need to know what your weaknesses are, and then you're a step ahead of the game. It's just a case of self-control, to avoid the pathways that lead to temptation.

Question: How is a love affair relationship's greatest pitfall?

Dr. Alfred Sparman: A love affair's greatest pitfall is complacency.

Question: Do you believe in love at first sight?

Dr. Alfred Sparman: No. There's no such entity as love at first sight, love is something else entirely. Love develops over time to such a point that you become selfless.

Question: How can we avoid lust?

Dr. Alfred Sparman: You can't avoid lust; it's what you do with lust that matters. It's all to do with inhibitions and impulse control.
