Shooting The Mafia

Shooting The Mafia

Espresso Cinema and Cinema Nova present the Exclusive Melbourne Film Premiere of Shooting The Mafia for one night only on 6.30pm Sunday 25 August - Cinema Nova.

Trailblazing Sicilian Letizia Battaglia began a lifelong battle with the Mafia when she first dared to point her camera at a murder victim. As the first woman photojournalist to work for an Italian newspaper, she found herself on the front lines during one of the bloodiest chapters in Italy's recent history. The intrepid Battaglia chronicled everyday Sicilian life, bearing unflinching witness to the brutal crimes of the Cosa Nostra despite the phenomenal personal risk.

In Shooting the Mafia, acclaimed British filmmaker Kim Longinotto weaves together Battaglia's photographs, classic Italian movies, rare archival film, and the now 84-year-old's own memories of her acclaimed work, her life and her lovers, offering a compelling insight into the life of a remarkable woman who has led a life continually defined by defiance and passion.
