ACMI has commissioned an ambitious new body of work from internationally-renowned Australian artist Shaun Gladwell; a suite of new pieces exploring duality, parallels and mirroring. Using filmic devices such as slow-motion and fixed frames, Gladwell captures both tightly choreographed and improvised performances by breakdancers, skateboarders, BMX bike-riders and graffiti artists in a combination of rural and city settings from Australia, Japan, Brazil, France and Afghanistan. The resulting works, which he describes as "performative landscapes”, are both rhythmic and poetic – distorting speed, gravity, space and time; exploring visual and spatial paradoxes.
