Macy Gray Covered

Macy Gray Covered

Covered is a collection of handpicked songs reinterpreted in her own inimitable fashion co-produced by Zoux, Hal Willner (Lou Reed, Sting, Tom Waits, Ringo Starr, Metallica) and Macy Gray herself. The album finds her at a creative peak, mastering a personal milestone in her career;
"After my first record I wanted to do a covers album, but I guess covers albums have kind of a stigma, they're not known to do very well and they're designed for people when they're not doing their own thing anymore," she tells Rolling Stone. "So I was talked out of it, but I've always wanted to do one."

'Covered' tackles material largely drawn from indie rock songs from the last decade-interpretations her fans will be familiar with as she's been performing them live over the years. The album contains biting, dark signature tracks such as Arcade Fire's "Wake Up" or My Chemical Romance's "Teenagers" which Gray subversively overhauls into something wholly her own. Also included are short skits featuring J.B. Smoove, Nicole Scherzinger and a guest appearance by Idris Elba. While Macy's mastery of these songs (and others, including Kanye West's "Love Lockdown) may surprise people who haven't been paying close attention, the artistic triumph won't come as a surprise to longtime fans with discerning ears.

Says Macy on being inspired by Nina Simone's cover songs: "She didn't worry about what people would think or how they would compare it to anybody else. I saw how she just took that song and every song she ever did and made them her own. So I went in with the confidence that we could do whatever we wanted."

Armed with multiple Grammys, MTV awards, more than 25 million units sold, and a thriving acting career (Macy has just wrapped filming 'The Paperboy' with John Cusack, Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman and Matthew McConaughey) Gray has forged a career creating music that leaps genre barriers from experimental soul to alternative rock, from retro-disco to hip-hop, collaborating with artists including John Frusciante, Erykah Badu, Gang Starr, Mos Def, and Pharoah Monche. Macy has forged an uncompromising musical path beholden to her own vision and garnering accolades at every juncture. With 'Covered' Macy has turned the cover album concept on its ear choosing edgy contemporary choices and approaching them in an innovative and uncompromising way.
