Jasmonates - A New Class Of Molecule That Fascinates Scientists

Our Research was one of the first to target Jasmonates' potential as an active ingredient for the skin, taking an interest in the plant healing process and the substances produced by plants to heal their wounds.


Plants are one of the few living organisms unable to flee from the sources of the multiple, diverse aggressors (viruses, fungi, herbivores, etc.) that threaten them, one of nature's primary defence mechanisms. An observation that may seem obvious, yet nonetheless highlights the power and sophistication of the defence strategies that they have had to develop since they appeared to withstand – and what's more survive in – hostile conditions.

Among their resilience mechanisms, our Research focused most especially on plants' ability to synthesise essential molecules that play a key role: molecules from the Jasmonate family. The latter act as real 'signal molecules" making it possible to trigger and activate the synthesis of repair and defence proteins that will make the plant more resilient.

Jasmonates also play an essential role in regulating the growth and development of plants in processes such as germination, root growth and the maturing of fruit. An area of knowledge that largely remains to be explored, thus offering exciting prospects for the future, the Jasmonate class is naturally of interest to medical research.

Our Research took Jasmonates as its inspiration in designing an unprecedented molecule, LR 2412. And once again focused on this class, convinced of its potential for the skin, to create a new VISIONNAIRE: VISIONNAIRE LR 2412 4% – Cx Advanced Skin Corrector.


LR 2412 – The Molecule In The Service Of Perfect Skin, Created By Our Research

A jasmonate created by our research according to an eco-friendly method and used for the very first time in 2011 in VISIONNAIRE, LR 2412 has a high affinity with the skin, allowing it to permeate evenly into all of the skin's compartments to recreate an exceptionally beautiful skin texture.

A real technological breakthrough, LR 2412 is today protected by 20 patents and is the subject of 18 scientific publications. Convinced of LR 2412's power and broad spectrum of action, Lancôme is continuing to capitalise on this incredible molecule.

Due to its structure, LR 2412 is an amphiphilic molecule that has an affinity for both aqueous and lipid structures. Thanks to this specific property, it fuses with the skin and permeates each of its compartments. Its power is thus diffused to the deepest structures.

A recent ex vivo study has allowed us to observe LR 2412's penetration capacity using a new multiphotonic technique known as CARS (Coherent Anti-strokes Raman Scattering). This study demonstrates how LR 2412 enfolds each skin cell, diffuses into the intercellular spaces and fuses with the skin's lipids.


With a penetration potential of this kind, LR 2412, a molecule with proven performance, acts in the skin's three compartments (epidermis, basement membrane and dermis) and targets no fewer than 14 biological markers affected by ageing. Involved in the proper organisation and quality of the skin's different layers, these markers influence its texture.

The in vitro studies carried out by our Research also show that LR 2412 revives cell activity and reactivates the synthesis of elements essential for a high-quality matrix (such as collagen I), improved cell-cell adhesion (syndecan, for example) and enhanced intercompartmental cohesion (collagens IV and VII and fibrillin).


LR 2412 – Cx – An Exclusive New Active Technology

On the strength of LR 2412's proven effectiveness and convinced of the benefits of Jasmonates for the skin, Lancôme has enriched VISIONNAIRE LR 2412 4% – Cx Advanced Skin Corrector's formula with a second Jasmonate, MDH Jasmonate.

MDH Jasmonate's structure presents complementary biological properties. In plants, in addition to its key role in the induction of defence systems, MDH Jasmonate plays an essential role in regulating plants' reproductive development and thus in the maturing of stamens and pollen.

In terms of the skin, it has been demonstrated that MDH Jasmonate has a complementary activity to LR 2412, because it boosts the expression of soluble factors promoting cell communication between the keratinocytes (epidermal cells) and fibroblasts (dermal cells), leading to the synthesis of hyaluronic acid.

2- LR 2412: A New Key Role in Hyaluronic Acid Production

Taking its understanding of biological mechanisms even further, our Research deciphers the series of reactions that take place in the skin, taking a particular interest in the series of reactions leading to the production of hyaluronic acid, which has not yet revealed all of its secrets.

Hyaluronic acid is a fascinating molecule. A member of the GAG (Glycosaminoglycan) family, it is a major component in all of the skin's compartments and therefore plays a fundamental role in tissue organisation and the transmission of biological signals between the cells and the different layers of the skin. Produced in the epidermal and dermal cell membranes, it is particularly abundant at birth but its levels tend to decrease with age.

Hyaluronic acid has a host of biological functions. Due to its large size, one of its major roles is to fill the intercellular spaces and retain water, lending the dermis in particular its fullness and texture. Hyaluronic acid therefore plays a leading role in skin quality.

However, it is also a key player in defending the skin against external attack. Hyaluronic acid is constantly being produced and then fragmented by enzymatic reactions. Whereas these processes are balanced in healthy skin, when the skin is in danger – an attack, an infection, or a wound – the breakdown of hyaluronic acid increases, leading to the formation of little fragments. These little fragments can then be detected by other cells, attach themselves to specific receptors and activate a series of reactions altering the skin's defence systems against external attack.


In vitro studies carried out by our Research show that LR 2412 reactivates the synthesis of molecules involved in the series of reactions leading to the synthesis of hyaluronic acid (hyaluronan synthase HAS2 and HAS3), its maturation (hyaluronidase) and binding to specific receptors (CD44v3). We have also been able to show that LR 2412 increases the total pool of hyaluronic acid in the skin.


An Exceptional Collaboration With Professor Gallo

Our research was confirmed during an international scientific collaboration established with Professor Gallo, Professor of Medicine, Paediatrics and Dermatology, Head of the Dermatology Department at the University of California, San Diego. An opinion leader in dermatology, he has contributed to several landmark observations and demonstrations and his work is internationally recognised and presented in benchmark scientific publications, including the highly prestigious journal Nature. Professor Gallo's work focuses on healthy skin, the biology of the skin and its defence systems, and hyaluronic acid.

The researcher and his teams have studied and confirmed the biological benefits for the skin of LR 2412, a molecule created by our Research, and proven that LR 2412 acts at several stages of the series of reactions leading to hyaluronic acid synthesis.

'Our work consisted in studying the effect of LR 2412 on hyaluronic acid production, on skin cell cultures," he explained. 'We have demonstrated that LR 2412 is a powerful inductor of the series of enzymatic reactions leading to hyaluronic acid synthesis. According to our experiments, LR 2412 is the most powerful molecule that we have studied."


A New Texture For A New Visionnaire
3 - A Texture That Becomes One With The Skin, Optimised For Even More Effectivness

With VISIONNAIRE LR 2412 4% – Cx Advanced Skin Corrector's new formula, Lancôme has put all of its expertise and formulation know-how to the service of our new LR 2412 – Cx complex.

Expert skills in the Science of Interfaces (the study of the physical and chemical phenomena that take place at the interface between two phases) and the use of an original 'comb" polymer have enabled the Lancôme laboratories to design a formula offering the amphiphilic molecule LR 2412 balanced and even distribution between these different phases.

To appeal more than ever to women, Lancôme has particularly worked on the sensory experience of this new formula, prioritising lightweight oils, for example, which combine a feeling of nourishment and comfort without leaving the skin shiny. The formula is now more generous to the touch and more enveloping on the skin.

To heighten the instant skin perfection effect, this new formula has also been enriched with optical agents. The presence of elastomers offers a very soft, powdery finish, as well as an 'invisible" matte finish for a 'bare skin" sensation and an instantly visible smoothing effect. To enhance the blurring effect and erase uneven texture, the formula also contains an original combination of silica and a 'cottony" micronised polymer. Last but not least, fine white pearly particles with an iridescent blue centre provide an
illuminating effect to beautifully enhance the skin.
