In the first episode of series seven we meet Ian and Sophie Cooper, a London couple who are passionate about design and who plan to restore a 200-year-old Grade 2 (UK) listed industrial building in an area of outstanding beauty.

The 'Apprentice Store' in Somerset, near Bath, has been derelict for over 25 years, its only inhabitants being a colony of bats. Before Ian and Sophie began the restoration process of the building, they first had to build a new 'bat cave' to re-house the protected mammals. Ian and Sophie not only plan to restore the old building, but add a large glass extension, creating a cool modern interior to make the most of the incredible views. However, they discover this wreck of a building has no foundations and sits on unstable ground.

The only way to prevent their dream home from sliding down the hill is by stabilising it with a mammoth piling system - a complex engineering job. Everything on this restoration from the windows to the pointing has to be approved by planning and conservation, which adds time and money to the construction process. Nearly two years and one baby later, Sophie has almost lost sight of why they are working on restoring this old building. For her, it feels more like a building project rather than the creation of a long-awaited family home.
