Old-school police inspector George Gently has found a new enthusiasm for his job after moving out of the increasingly corrupt Scotland Yard, London in the 1960s to Northumberland. He has developed a fatherly attitude towards cocky young Durham Detective Sergeant John Bacchus and wants to prevent him learning unethical police procedures.
