Celebrate the Winter Solstice in Sydney

Celebrate the Winter Solstice in Sydney

This week we will officially celebrate the longest night of the year, known to many as winter solstice. Thursday 21 June marks the day with the shortest period of sunlight, bringing us the longest night of the year and all the more reason to explore your after dark creativity.

Although winter is well and truly upon us, by no means does this mean laying low. There are a number of events and activities available to explore in and around Sydney, from special -After Dark' events to waking up the right way. Warm up your winter with these winter solstice inspired activities thanks to Baron Samedi Spiced.

The After Dark

To kick off Sydney's winter solstice celebrations, Baron Samedi Spiced is hosting -After Dark', an immersive light, video and sound experience at iconic Sydney venue The Argyle from 6pm on Thursday 21 June. Revel in the after dark creativity and enjoy three bespoke cocktails, specially crafted for the longest night of the year.

Celebrate the Yule

In ancient Pagan and Wiccan tradition winter solstice is celebrated as the Yule, symbolising a connection to the earth and acknowledging rebirth and renewal. Gather with family and friends to light candles in honour of the winter solstice season.

Winter Solstice Viewing

Take advantage of the daylight hours this winter solstice and set your intentions for the day ahead. Known as the spiritual new year, winter solstice is a time for reflection and forward planning as we enter the remainder of the year. Before heading to work, get out of bed before the sun and watch the spectacular morning show from one of the many vantage points around the city.

Halfway out of the Dark

When winter solstice falls it is believed to be the perfect time to reflect on what has happened throughout the year, getting rid of all bad thoughts and experiences and making room for the new. Get together in the Botanical Gardens of Sydney for a personal experience to reflect in your own way with family and friends this winter solstice.

Winter Solstice Festivities

Why not partake in traditional winter solstice activities and try your hand at drumming, dancing and jam sessions. You can do this at one of the designated fire pits in The Basin surrounded by the beautiful Hawkesbury River. It is known that people use this time for affirmations where people are encouraged to write down their thoughts on paper and burn what they don't need in their life anymore.
