Since the passage of the Refugee Act of 1980, approximately 2.8 million refugees have been resettled in the United States, reports Refugee Council USA. In 2010 alone, 73,311 refugees settled in the United States, according to the Administration for Children and Families.

But just because these refugees are settling doesn't mean they are going to make a successful living in our country. To have the best shot at success, they need our help.

So how can we make their settlement experience as smooth as possible - while providing a benefit to both refugees and the U.S.?

Author and refugee expert Jeffrey Kirk has been sheltering and resettling refugees since 2001. With more and more refugees getting the chance to start new lives in the United States every year, Kirk believes the time is now to help other Americans take action with his book, 10 Million to 1: Refugee Resettlement - A How-to Guide.

"There are somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 million refugees in the world today," says Kirk. "The problem is staggering, but not impossible to fix. Working together, we can focus on one family at a time, repeating the process until all 10 million refugees can either go home or have a new home. Together, we can make the world a better place."

10 Million to 1 is an in-depth how-to guide in refugee settlement, written for volunteers and others who work with refugees. Drawn from Kirk's real life experiences, the book gives readers the knowledge and insight into what it takes to help refugees and how they can be of service to them, from meeting refugee families at the airport to assisting them with housing, jobs and citizenship.

An inspiring guide, 10 Million to 1 provides all the tools one needs to help refugee families start productive, self-sufficient lives that allow them to positively contribute to our society.

"I've devoted my life to improving the lives of others," says Kirk. "We must work to provide the best environment for refugees in every aspect of their lives for the benefit of us all."
