School Holiday Fun at Artplay

April at ArtPlay is bursting with creative workshops and artistic experiences ready for the school holidays.

Children aged 5 to 12 can take part in pottery workshops, create colourful inflatable sculptures, explore the music, art and food of Indonesia or explore immersive underwater landscapes made from recycled plastics.

Crosshatched Pottery Demonstration
Sunday 7 April
2pm to 4pm
Free, bookings not required
Ages: 5 to 12 years
A traditional pottery workshop with two visiting international artists from Rajasthan, India - Come along and see potters Manohar Lal and Assha Ram demonstrate how they make pots on their traditional pottery wheels, learn decorating techniques and try your skills out on a clay bowl.

Air Camp
Saturday 13 April to Sunday 14 April
10am to 4pm
$40 per child, bookings essential
Ages: 9 to 12 years
An original work developed through the ArtPlay New Ideas Lab, Air Camp by Memetica invites children to express their perspective by creating colourful inflatable sculptures from repurposed tents, sparking conversation on issues that children care about: the environment, soccer, politics and space!
The sculptures will then be attached to a larger world of interconnected tents, creating an interactive pop-up installation hosted by the young artists.
The pop-up installation is free to visit, with the whole family invited to enjoy.

The Sound of Shadows
Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 April
10am, 12.30pm and 3pm

Ages 6 to 9 years
Another original work developed through the ArtPlay New Ideas Lab, The Sound of Shadows by musician and composer Bianca Gannon explores some of the music, art and food traditions of our nearest neighbor – Indonesia.
Children will engage with rare food-related musical instruments, such as the Javanese duck herder's bamboo Bundengan umbrella-cape that makes gentle gong sounds and the Lombok fairy floss vendor's tins that play gamelan tunes. They will also record music, create shadow puppets and sample delicious Indonesian fairy floss.

See the return exhibition of Beneath by Making Space, nominated for best kids event at Melbourne Fringe 2017.
Beneath invites family's to come and explore an immersive underwater landscape created from recycled plastic. This participatory experience encourages us to consider our relationship to the environment, asking us to reflect on where our plastic ends up.
