Lush Cosmetics Australia has proudly partnered with Sea Shepherd
Australia this Plastic-Free July to address the issue of marine debris pollution in Mapoon, a biodiversity hotspot and the traditional land of the Tjungundji people in Far North Queensland.
To raise awareness and funds for Sea Shepherd Australia, Lush has today launched the limited edition 'Waru' bath bomb, named after the Tjungundji word meaning 'turtle'. Available online and in Lush stores across Australia from 14 July, 75% of sales from the bespoke product will be donated directly to Sea Shepherd Australia, with a goal to raise $40,000 AUD to fund the 2026 Mapoon beach clean.
Leading Sea Shepherd Australia's Remote Marine Debris Campaign, Grahame Lloyd says, "Under the stewardship of the Mapoon Land and Sea Rangers, these lands have been safeguarded since 1989. However, this pristine ecosystem, and vital breeding habitat for native turtle species, faces overwhelming threats from heavily polluted waste carried by the Arafura current from south-east Asian countries. Mapoon's remote Aboriginal community endures some of the largest pollution unmanaged by the Australian Government."
Lloyd continues, "The reality is that if this was happening in Bondi, Cable or Noosa Main Beach, our Government would not turn a blind eye like they continue to do in Mapoon. The disproportionate impact of pollution on remote Aboriginal communities is something that must be addressed.
On the partnership, Lush Cosmetics' Advocacy and Activism Executive, Jessielee Pearce says, "Lush has been actively campaigning for social justice since 1995, always striving to leave the world Lusher than we found it. We have funded the Mapoon beach clean for three years through the support of our Charity Pot programme. This year, we are bringing the issue into our stores across Australia and Aotearoa through the purchase of this limited-edition Waru bath bomb, designed without any packaging to embody the mission."
"Every purchase helps protect Mapoon, one of Australia's most precious nesting sites for native Flatback, Olive Ridley and Hawksbill turtles that are deeply sacred to the local Aboriginal community. We're proud to support Sea Shepherd Australia as they work tirelessly alongside Indigenous rangers and local communities to remove plastic pollution and protect this fragile ecosystem," Pearce continues.
The convenience of plastic is creating a devastating environmental and social problem, but it's not too late to stem the tide. Of all plastic produced, 50% is used to make single-use items with a life span of just 12 minutes, and of the 5,800 million tonnes of primary plastic no longer in use, only 9% has been
recycled since 19501. The power lies in people eliminating single-use items from everyday life and picking up trash before it enters the ocean. If we don't act now, by 2050 there could be more plastic than fish in the oceans2.
Lush Melbourne Central will also host a Plastic Free July gallery from 14-30 July. This immersive experience will feature a colourful, woven sculpture known as 'ghost net art' made by artist Anita Staaden. Anita's art represents the coming together of her lifelong interests in art, nature, spirituality and water sports, blending artistry with a profound reverence for the natural world's beauty.
With a renewed focus on advocating for animals and environmental conservation, the sculpture, 'One Balloon = One Life', depicts a sea turtle named Binguing - the Arakwal (Byron Bay) word for sea turtle, meaning bringer of knowledge of the sea country - rising toward the surface, where danger awaits. Crafted entirely from beach-collected trash, the turtle represents the resilience and beauty of marine life, while the floating plastic above mimics jellyfish, highlighting a deadly deception.
This work invites viewers to see the ocean through a turtle's eyes, to recognise how everyday waste, especially balloons and soft plastics, becomes lethal in the sea.
Lush customers will also be able to sign-up for future Australian Sea Shepherd beach clean-ups in store, with campaign videos driving further education and awareness of the issue. learn more about what's happening in Mapoon
