David Thompson, widely acclaimed expert on Thai food and culinary techniques, is set to return to Australia with Virgin Atlantic, as the special guest for the 2009 Electrolux Appetite for Excellence Awards night in August.

With applications due to close on April 24, the nationwide search for emerging talent in the restaurant and catering industry aims to support and encourage young professionals working in all aspects of hospitality.

Luke Mangan, leading Australian chef/restaurateur and co-founder of the program, along with business partner Lucy Allon, has welcomed David Thompson on board for this years program with enthusiasm. “David will be a great inspiration to the finalists of this years competition, particularly those competing in the new Young Restaurateur category. He is a perfect example of where determination and opportunity can take you,” said Mangan.

Davids commitment to authentic Thai saw his first restaurant, Darley Street Thai voted Best Thai Restaurant by Sydney Morning Herald, every one of the eight years that it was open. His career has since seen him open Sailors Thai in The Rocks, Sydney before moving to London and international success with Nahm, located in the Halkin hotel, London. Awarded a Michelin Star in 2002, which it
retains today, David further cemented his international standing when he was voted “outstanding London chef” in 2003 at Londons leading restaurant awards ceremony; The Tio Pepe ITV restaurant awards. His knowledge, skill and sense of Thai culture have earned him many accolades from food writers the world over.
