Clinique Pore Refining Solutions Instant Perfector

Since 2003, Pore Minimiser Instant Perfector has been an indispensable life-saver for anyone seeking to immediately conceal large pores. But, with over 300,000 pores on every face, these tiny holes remain a major skin care concern worldwide and simple concealing is no longer enough.

Introducing Clinique's new Pore Refining Solutions Instant Perfector - upgraded with "smart" sebum-balancing ingredients that not only provide an immediate reduction in the appearance of pores by over 50%, but also help minimise excess sebum production - an important, long-term approach to diminishing pore size. This "smart" technology maintains skin's equilibrium, so pores remain undetected throughout the day. The beloved, lightweight texture of the previous formula remains the same, leaving behind a completely flawless, matte finish all day.

A Balancing Act
Skin needs a proper balance, as excess sebum production can lead to clogged pores, but not enough sebum can reveal dry, tight skin. The new Pore Refining Solutions Instant Perfector incorporates a blend of Hydrolyzed Soy Protein and Coconut Acid to help minimse sebum production only where needed. This "smart" technology helps maintain skin's equilibrium by using ingredients that seek out areas with excess sebum and normalise oil production creating a healthy, poreless look for up to eight hours.

How it Works
On contact, specialised cross-linked silicone polymers drape the skin in an invisible, breathable film that fills in and smoothes out the pore surface providing immediate oil absorbing benefits, leaving skin with a flawless matte finish. Sophisticated spherical optical diffusers and soft focus materials help diffuse light to minimise the look of imperfections while Vitamin E and Stearyl Glycyrrhetinate provide necessary antioxidant and anti-inflammatory protection.

Pore Refining Solutions Instant Perfector is now available in 3 skin-perfecting tints - NEW Invisible Bright, Invisible Light and Invisible Deep. This advanced, long-wearing formula conceals without adding colour to the complexion, and can be worn under or over foundation, with just powder, or alone. It can be used over the whole face or just in the t-zone and can be reapplied as needed throughout the day for touch-ups.

Pore Refining Solutions Instant Perfector is part of Clinique's Pore Refining Solutions Franchise which also contains Pore Refining Solutions Correcting Serum - a treatment product that instantly diminishes the appearance of pores while helping to strengthen and tighten skin's surface structure over time.

Interview with Dr. Tom Mammone, ED

Question: What are pores and what is their function?

Dr. Tom Mammone: Pores have an important function in skin physiology - they provide the openings for three different glands: the apocrine, sweat, and sebaceous glands. Apocrine glands secrete hormones which are most active during the onset of puberty; sweat glands help the body to cool itself, responding to elevated body temperature; and, sebaceous glands, which are the most noticeable, secrete sebum and are associated with the hair follicle. The hair follicle within the pore allows the oil generated in the sebaceous glands to reach the surface and moisten the skin. Pores tend to be more visible on the parts of the face where oil the oil glands are bigger - the nose and forehead.

Question: Are there genetic factors that influence pore size?

Dr. Tom Mammone: The size of your pores can depend on many factors, including your skin tone and type. Lighter skin tones and drier skin types tend to have smaller pores whereas olive and dark skin tones and oiler skin types tend to have more noticeable pores. Pores can also appear larger in darker skin types due to the accumulation of melanin in the debris that clogs the pore. There is also a direct correlation between pore size and sebum production - too much sebum creates enlarged pores.

Question: How do pores become enlarged?

Dr. Tom Mammone: As we age, the cell renewal and maturation process becomes irregular which can result in a compromised skin barrier and rough, uneven skin texture. Sun damage causes inflammation that can promote excessive oil production as well as weaken the collagen and elastin within the deeper layers of the skin that support pores. Picking at your skin and squeezing a pimple can also cause inflammation and permanently damage to the pore walls. Pore walls can be stretched over time due to clogging from excess oil production and cellular debris, such as dead skin cells that build up around the edges of the pores, making them appear larger than they really are. Finally, dehydration causes skin cells to flatten, increasing the gaps between cells and adding to the appearance of enlarged pores.

Question: Do pores age like the rest of the skin?

Dr. Tom Mammone: Recent studies show that pores appear to age like the rest of the skin by growing both larger and longer, forming a more elliptical shape, as we get older. This is due to both excessive sebum production as well as sagging skin that results from long-term damage to the underlying skin structure.

Question: Are there any preventative steps to take?

Dr. Tom Mammone: The easiest, most basic steps we can take to help reduce pore size are to cleanse the skin daily to remove excess oil and cellular debris that accumulates in the pore then follow with gentle exfoliation to remove any additional dead skin cells. Finally, apply a light moisturizer to plump and hydrate the skin. Ensuring that your skin's moisture barrier is hydrated with an intact skin barrier is essential to maintaining the skin structures that support the walls of the pore. If this skin is dehydrated then the pore will appear enlarged. This process of cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising will help the pore to "snap" back to its original size.

Question: How does the Pore Resurfacing Complex work?

Dr. Tom Mammone: The Pore Refining Solutions Correcting Serum features a specially-developed Pore Resurfacing Complex that helps to address the five major causes of enlarged pores by supporting natural cell maturation, balancing oil production, providing gentle desquamation and lightly hydrating.

Question: Is there a star ingredient within this complex or in the overall serum?

Dr. Tom Mammone: The serum presents a multi-prong approach to treating the appearance of enlarged pores; so there are many "star" ingredients. The Complex contains Padina Pavonica Extract, which is derived from Mediterranean brown algae which helps support the cell maturation process, strengthening the skin's epidermal layer. Pores appear visibly smaller. Laminaria Saccharina helps minimize oil production so a more balanced oil level is maintained throughout the day. Salicylic Acid encourages healthy cell renewal by loosening the material that holds surface cells together to gently unclog pores and release dead, dulling surface skin cells. Hydrolyzed Soy Protein and Coconut Acid are also extremely important to help minimise sebum production only where needed. This "smart" technology helps maintain skin's equilibrium by using ingredients that seek out areas with excess sebum and normalise oil production creating a healthy, poreless look for up to eight hours.

Question: What kind of improvements can I expect to see in pore size after using this product? How is it measured?

Dr. Tom Mammone: Within just two weeks, our clinical tests measured a 58% reduction in the appearance of enlarged pores, along with a decrease in clogged pores and blackheads. Clinical tests showed an improvement the skin texture and smoothness. Further, by using the Pore Refining Solutions Instant Perfector, testing showed an immediate reduction in the appearance of pores by over 50%.

Question: If I have clogged pores, will Pore Refining Solutions Correcting Serum work for me?

Dr. Tom Mammone: The high-powered Pore Resurfacing Complex provides significant exfoliation benefits which will actually help to clear clogged pores, allowing the serum to absorb and work on the support structures of the skin.

Question: Can I use Pore Refining Solutions Correcting Serum with other Clinique serums such as Even Better Clinical and Repairwear Laser Focus? Does it matter which order I apply them in?

Dr. Tom Mammone: All Clinique skin care products are designed to be layered. The order of application for serums typically doesn't matter, but since Pore Refining Solutions Correcting Serum also has optical benefits and a velvety feel, it is perfect as the last step before applying moisturiser or foundation.

Question: What is the difference between the optical and the treatment benefits of the products?

Dr. Tom Mammone: Optics is makeup, pigments or other cosmetic materials (like silica and mica) that immediately improve skin's appearance by influencing the way light reflects off of the face to create a soft-focus effect. Therefore, Clinique's Pore Refining Serum provides consumers with both immediate and long-term benefits.

Question: Are there really 300,000 pores on every face?

Dr. Tom Mammone: This number can vary depending on genetics and size of the face, but on average, it is around 300,000.
