This exhibition features rare surviving photographs of traditional carved trees in western NSW, from 1920 to 1940. These photos are among few surviving records of this beautiful and forgotten Indigenous art form.

Intricate patterns were often carved into trees by the Wiradjuri and Gamilaroi people of NSW to mark the burial sites of significant people. Created by male artists using mostly stone tools, the carvings also marked the sites where boys were initiated into manhood.
