Mamang and Noongar Mambara Bakitj

The books Mamang and Noongar Mambara Bakitj were created as part of an Indigenous language recovery project led by Kim Scott and the Wirlomin Noongar Language & Stories Project WA. These tales were originally passed on to the American linguist Gerhardt Laves in Albany in the early 1930s. After Laves' death in 1993 these stories were returned to the Wirlomin Noongar people. The Mamang and Noongar Mambara Bakitj stories were discussed and carefully reworked in a series of community meetings involving elders - including some of the children of those who told stories to Laves in 1931.

Presented in both Noongar and English, this book will inspire and delight all ages. Artists Jeffrey Farmer, Helen Nelly, Roma Winmar and Geoffrey Woods have created stunning illustrations to accompany the testimonial story.

*Noongar country covers the the south-west corner of Western Australia, extending from around Geraldton on the west coast to east of Esperance on the south coast.
