Juna Vera An Unexpected Love

A film by Juan Vera

Cast: Ricardo Darín, Mercedes Morán
Director: Juna Vera
Rated: M
Running Time: 125 minutes

Synopsis: Juan Vera's smart, funny and hugely entertaining romantic comedy hit An Unexpected Love features two of Latin cinema's most beloved stars, the superb Ricardo Darín and Mercedes Morán, as a long-married couple who are led to question the true meaning of love and desire after becoming empty nesters.

When Ana (Morán, Neruda, The Motorcycle Diaries) and Marco (Darín, Truman, Wild Tales) arrive at the airport to farewell their son Luciano, who is leaving his Argentine homeland to study abroad, they are filled with certainty that they've done well as parents. However, his departure leaves a significant hole in their everyday lives, and after more than twenty years of marriage, both reluctantly come to admit that their feelings for each other have shifted. So as if it were one last project together, Ana and Marco decide to 'consciously uncouple', and begin to explore the surprising and sometimes wonderful world of the newly-single, to hilarious and unexpected results.

This wonderful showcase for its two leads unsurprisingly stormed the local box office, becoming one of Argentina's biggest hits of the year. Intelligent, warm and wise, An Unexpected Love is a sheer delight.

Director's Note

An Unexpected Love is a film of characters. It's a film where dialogue pours out, the protagonists, like two talking heads, tell each other the truth, they don't try to avoid, nor do they fear conflict. They know each other quite deeply; they appreciate each other's intelligence and brag about irony. A well-read couple, they are familiar with the concepts of Existential Angst, and Finitude.

A group of secondary characters are there to express their different ways and views towards love, sexuality, life together, desire, and also solitude. All of them as valid options.

This is also a generational film, for people born in the 60s, pierced by those years, both culturally and in terms of life experience. They have seen almost all utopias die, and now they live with the weight of disenchantment, yet still vitally and optimistically.

In regards of the visual style, the camera will be there for the actors and for the mise en scene. The characters are to move freely within the frame. We will be bystanders to their lives.

Although the film portrays serious life themes like the nature of love, the durability and alteration of desire, and infidelity, I definitely intend to tell the story from a ludic distance, with some kind of optimistic scepticism, allowing the viewer to think, to maybe feel a bit restless, yet without a real urgency or gravity.
