Haunted by the trauma of the Fronde as the nobles of his court begin to rebel against the monarchy, King Louis XIV (George Blagden, Vikings, Les Miserables) decides to make the nobility submit in a Machiavellian political move by imposing a definite move of the court from the city of Paris to his father's former hunting lodge, Versailles.

Dragging his beloved nation out of the darkness, King Louis ushers in a new age of opulence in pre-Revolutionary France with decadent displays of wealth and power when he commissions the creation of Versailles. The palace becomes Europe's most lavish residence with endless mirrored halls and gilded gates, hosting some of France's most extravagant parties.

However, trapped by their king's -invitation', the nobles of Paris gradually come to see the castle as a means of imprisonment to control them. Soon even the most humble courtiers of the King begin to show their viciousness, as the alcoves of secrets, politics and war are maneouvered through, revealing Versailles in all its glory and brutality.
